samurai shigeru: the book

Help Preserve a Legacy

It all started when…

Sam Goto decided to dedicate his spare time to the illustration and creation of a weekly cartoon strip for the North American Post (A Japanese - American newspaper in the Seattle area.) Soon this comic strip took a life of its own, becoming an outlet for history, family stories, humor and philosophy.

Sam’s last comic strip was published in the North American Post in August 2019, along with a republished retrospective. Read the article here.

This special edition newspaper was possible due to a grant by the JCCCW. Bruce Rutledge, a writer, publisher and long time contributor to the North American Post along with his daughter Kimi, came to the Goto’s house to take photos and interview Sam. It turned out to be Sam’s last healthy day.

The newspaper was scheduled to be published in March 2019. It was not intended to be post-mortem, but ended up being part of Sam’s Celebration of Life event held on March 10, 2019 on Mercer Island. Here is a digital copy of the special edition which features an interview, photos and selected cartoons arranged in themes.
